Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) differs from conventional wireless communication networks in various characteristics. One of them is the power awareness since the batteries of sensor nodes have limited lifetime and are difficult to be replaced. Therefore, all protocols must be designed to minimize energy consumption and to preserve the long life of a network. In the last few years, there has been a tremendous interest on careful node deployment strategy in WSNs, as it can be a very efficient means for achieving the desired design objective. Different geometrical shapes are considered for node deployment. The geometric shape and area without overlap is satisfied by a hexagon, square, and triangle, because they can cover an entire area without overlapping i.e., they can cover the entire geographical region without any gaps. In this paper, HEX-HEED is proposed which shows the implications of hexagonal grid based node deployment strategy of sensor nodes on network area coverage in WSNs. More commonly under some deployment assumptions, it has been proved by mathematical analysis and through MATLAB simulations that our proposed scheme gives rise to a substantial reduction in power consumption. Hence, HEX-HEED enhance the network lifetime and yield significant saving in overall power consumption of a cluster as compared to Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH).
