Abstract

Coastal landforms are created from the combined processes of erosion, sediment transfer and
sediment deposition. Due to low gradient and gentle slope associated with the lower course of the
rivers as they flow to the coast the sediment loads are deposited at the river bank to further narrow
the river channels while some are deposited on the river bed making the river channels shallow.
Eroded materials from the upper and the middle course of river through abrasion and corrosion,
dissolution are deposited along the channels of the meanders. The tributaries of the two major rivers
in Nigeria (Niger and Benue) carry a lot of sediments along with them which are deposited within the
delta regions.
