Abstract

The study assessed the roles of Non-Timber Forest Products in the livelihood sustainance in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria. A Multi-stage sampling technique was random used for the selection of respondents. A total of one hundered (100) copies of questionnaires were administered, in which twenty five (25) copies each were administered to each of the 4 wards. And the questionnaire used was coded and analysed using descriptive statistic, data obtained was subjected to chi-square to see whether there is significant difference of some of the respondent.The result obtained revealed that men and women were involve in collection of different NTFPs which are mainly used locally and to a lesser extent commercially. Thus fruits, leaves, gums, epiphyte, barks and wildlife. Among others are mostly collected is the gum Arabic are highly marketed. The majority of the respondent were at the aged group of 31- 40(33.3% were male dominated by (60.2%) and whose household ranges from 3-4 were (32.4%) and without western education (47.7%) and majority of the collector were married (70.2%). The major occupation is farming and the farmers were (31.5%) depending on the NTFPs. In conclusion the collection of NTFPs for livelihood sustainance in Gujba LGA, through provision of various NTFPs such as leaves fruits, gums and wildlife for domestic use and sales for income generation and the sources of their livelihood sustainance become highly necessary.
