Abstract

The state of ill-health with high mortality in low- and middle-income countries is not due to lack of resources alone. The underlying cause is the lack of the user -side perspective in leadership and organization of healthcare services especially in maternal and new born healthcare. The user communities are not working in partnership with healthcare providers and healthcare managers. The health system needs to adopt the Psycho-Bio-Social and Spiritual (PBSS) model of health which integrates spiritual health into healthcare. Spiritual health, as a combined product of the mind, the body, the environment and the human spirit, could produce comprehensive health; characterized by happiness, health and wealth for good life. The newly conceptualized NISE theory with its tools; the PBSS model, M-ACCE-SS tools, the ten-point action formula, the moral and ethical virtues for transformative servant leadership and partnership with users could provide the way forward towards realization of holistic community health and development.
